 What is MagSafe for iPhone?

When the highly anticipated iPhone 12 made its way into market in 2021, Apple enthusiasts were delighted to discover that the amazing smartphone also came with a whole new MagSafe accessories ecosystem. This fantastic new tech makes it much easier to attach and align an Apple wireless charger and other accessories to the iPhone 12, 13, and 14 ranges.

Here is why this has everyone at our adidas phone case HQ so excited right now.

What exactly is MagSafe though?

The term MagSafe has been heard in the halls of Apple before – it was the name of a previous generation of MacBook chargers. At that stage, however, it wasn’t a wireless technology. The magnetic element of the chargers allowed for quick and simple snapping on, was easy to use even in the dark, and paved the way for fewer charger-related accidents.

MagSafe for iPhone is a slightly different kettle of fish, however. The fully wireless charging standard has negated the need for a Lightning port, which allows for better waterproofing and leaves more room to play inside the phone cassis (larger battery, anyone?!).

The perfectly aligned magnets attach to your iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, Max, Pro-MaxPlusiPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, Pro-MaxiPhone 12, and iPhone 12 Pro or Pro-Max and provide faster wireless charging up to 15W. This doubles the previous wattage that was previously achieved on the iPhone 8, and brings it in line with even the fastest-charging Android mobiles.

INSIDER TIP: Apple-branded and Apple-approved chargers reach the 15W mark, but off-brand chargers will only yield a charging speed of 7.5W at best.

How does MagSafe for iPhone work?

MagSafe for iPhone works by means of a ring of 18 rectangular magnets around the Qi-based wireless charging coils, instead of magnets built into a specific charging area. Older iPhones had the same wireless charging coil, but no magnets underneath to allow for magnetic connections.

The new tech allows for a nice, close fit and snappy charging speeds. The ‌MagSafe‌ Charger is a very attractive piece of technology that looks quite a bit like a larger Apple Watch Charging Puck with an aluminum body and a soft white material at the top of the charger. This unit snaps onto the ‌iPhone‌ with its magnets inside, which perfectly aligns the charging coil in the ‌charger with the charging coil in the ‌iPhone‌.

In short – you won’t ever walk up to the charging station and find that your phone had not quite been aligned and, as a result, did not gain any juice.

Why MagSafe for iPhone is exciting for accessories

Moving beyond charging technology, MagSafe for iPhone in the iPhone 12 and later models also uses the magnet ring to connect to accessories that have complementary magnets embedded inside.

Our adidas phone case development team loves this tech because it gives us amazing design freedom. For instance, cases with an extra magnetic ring that enhances the MagSafe functionality and allows the easy attachment and alignment of accessories without having to remove your case.

In fact, the clever design of the innovative magnet ring allows the ‌iPhone 12‌ and later to work wonderfully with a whole range of amazing accessories that rely on magnets, including card holders, grips, stands and more.

Can the magnets cause any issues?

As we all learned in physics class, magnets are rather magical, but they also exert a fair amount of force. So, what does this mean for the other things we like to carry around, tucked neatly inside our iPhone cases? According to official information from Apple, a MagSafe wallet is unlikely to cause any more damage to magnet-sensitive items than any other smartphone would.

Conventional credit cards are mostly resistant to magnetic interference and if you use a chip or contactless payments there is no cause for concern. However, if you want to play it safe, it is recommended that the following items not be carried in a MagSafe for iPhone case:

  • Single-use hotel cards
  • Security badges
  • Passport cards
  • Key fobs

There you have it – a short and sweet look at MagSafe for iPhone technology and how this game-changing technology has set the scene for even more exciting developments in the world of smartphone accessory design.
